The papers consist of correspondence from 1868 to 1878 and receipts and accounts from 1879 to 1917. The letters are among company employees in San Francisco, Carson City, and Virginia City. They discuss transportation costs and problems, acquisition of new timber lands, and lawsuits over land, especially trespassers. The letters include a few mentions of legal battles with John Mckay and James Fair. A few shipping statements are mixed with the correspondence. The financial documents for 1879-1917 concern the Mill Ranch, a cattle operation which may have been the sole concern of W. S. Hobart.
